How to Use Vector Brushes to Recreate Retro Artwork

by Dustin Lee October 22, 2015

I've always loved seeing how designers create their designs.

Like, actually seeing them do it. Not just reading about it (which isn't very helpful for a visual medium).

I made this time lapse video to show you how I recreated a piece of authentic 1940s commercial art using the VectorHero brush pack and, my personal favorite, VectorTone.

I hope watching this is useful and inspiring to you!

Need vector brushes? We've created six premium packs (ink, watercolor, halftones, chalk, charcoal and pencils) you can use in any situation. It's called The VectorBrush Toolkit and includes 200 brushes each made from authentic retro source material.

In this beginner Illustrator tutorial you will learn how to create a leaf-filled, vector tree step by step. Some of the techniques we’ll use are custom made Illustrator brushes to create the leaves, and Gradient Mesh Tool for creating light and shadows. Illustrator is great for creating sharp flawless lines and elements, but sometimes you want to create an illustration with some texture and depth. Watercolor paintings have great textures and depth and their look can be made in vector. In this intermediate Illustrator tutorial learn all the wonderful things vectors have to offer, like scalability. Blends and Illustrator brushes make up the majority of the techniques used in this tutorial.

If I noticed correctly, you did the line art free hand (with a mid-low range fidelity setting maybe), but then you went back over them with pen/direct selection tools. I assume you used blog brushes to do this or did you do some sort of expand step that I missed from the time lapse nature of video? Thanks Dustin
