Create an authentic vintage effect in Photoshop

Want to create an authentic, vintage-looking design but not sure where to start? In this handy video tutorial, designer Keith Tatum – aka The Type Hunter – explains how to add a faded look to your artwork in less than 30 minutes, using the RetroSupply Analog Ink Foundry kit of Photoshop brushes, textures and templates.

“I wanted to leverage the unique textures that exist in the Analog Ink kit,” he explains. “The smart PSD file inside the product serves as a quick way to get realistic ink textures to bring an otherwise flat, vector piece to life with vintage character.”

“I’ll show you how to utilize the brayer ink layers to get a weathered, printed look that might have come from an old press. They also provide an aged look that feels like time has worn away the ink. This ephemeral approach emulates the effects that occur when printing real ink onto textured paper.”

In this video, Keith explains how to incorporate the Analogue Ink tools into your creative workflow, and shares advice for harnessing them to achieve a vintage look. But he also has two bonus tips for creating a vintage effect in your designs:

01. Feature the edges

“To get an authentic, vintage printed look, make sure you feather out the edges of your type and artwork to take away crisp edges and bleed them into the texture of the paper,” Keith advises. “Gaussian blurs in Photoshop can be a quick way to achieve this bleed into a paper texture.”

02. Collect vintage resources

“It’s always useful to find and perhaps even collect vintage papers so you can scan them at a high resolution to give your vintage work even more authentic character. I like to build up a library of textures to use in work. RetroSupply has created numerous brush textures, so you have an arsenal already at your disposal.”

For Keith, it’s important to work with the right resources. “This project was a great reminder that RetroSupply tools are super-intuitive to dive into,” he explains. “Everything for using the tools was well documented and helpful guidance even appears on the layers in Photoshop.”

“Working with Analog Ink saves a fair amount of time for getting a faded ink look into a piece. It’s proof that an authentic vintage-looking design can be accomplished in under 30 minutes, if you’ve got the right tools and techniques.”
