Get 19th Century American Wood Cut Type Effects Instantly (Innovative Photoshop Action)
In the early 19th century breakthroughs in printing technology transformed print forms away from hand lettered script styles and into industrial, hard edged blocks of type.
For over a century print companies like Hamilton Manufacturing, Empire Wood Type Co., American Wood Type Mfg Co. and Eastern Brass & Wood Type created beautiful type for mass consumption. A huge variety of gothic, antique and slab fonts were used to create gorgeous advertisements, notices, posters and more.
In the 1920s wood type product began to decline due to faster due to offset printing technology. But wood type still lives on through a handful of printers that still practice this tradition.
How It Works
American Wood Type is directly inspired by this history and manufactures. Using common woods and inks we've done our best to recreate these print effects digitally using textures, patterns and a powerful Photoshop action.
American Wood Type allows you to achieve these effects quickly on all but the largest Photoshop canvases. No Smart PSDs. Just one powerful action that lets you choose the textures, colors, edges, and intensity of your wood type effects.
Want to take American Wood Type for a test run? Download the sample version here. It only contains 3 of the effects and is for personal use only. But it's fun to use and you'll get a good idea how the product works!
Let's face it. It's basically impossible to find good ink textures for your work. You can search all over the web for brushes and end up wasting hours (and still have no good tools to show for it).
I'll let you in on a little secret (and this is exactly why they're so hard to find)...
Most of the people making these brushes are getting other people's free resources (and poorly made low resolution ones at that) and creating their own brushes or textures from them.
Plus, the original brushes and textures weren't even made from real ink textures in the first place!
The result is a disappointing set of tools that make it seem impossible to get these effects.
I've always wanted a pack like this (and always been majorly disappointed and the products on the market).
So while on sabbatical in Florence, Italy I discovered a little art shop on a cobblestone side street. I couldn't resist going in (especially when I imagined that guys like Michelangelo had probably walked down these same streets).
Inside I found a little shop packed from floor to ceiling with paint, ink, brushes, rollers and paper. I decided that I wanted to take a little piece of my journey home with me (in the form of some amazing ink textures).
So I bought a bunch of ink, rollers, brushes and paper and went back to my apartment for the weekend to make the best ink pack that I could.

Sometimes you need something quick and simple to get the job done.
We made our new line of Essential texture packs to give you highly specific textures, brushes, and other resources, at a great price.
Our flagship pack is the Concrete Essential Texture Pack. To make the textures we grabbed our handy Canon 50D and Sigma 13-35mm lens and hit the streets.
We photographed concrete textures from old walls in downtown Portland, sidewalks in new developments, and garage concrete textures from our own RetroSupply studio. Then we picked the best 10 textures and made them in every file format you'll ever need.

I love working in Illustrator.
But I HATE adding textures in Illustrator.
Yeah, you know why... Because of this spinning wheel of death! It pops up when I least expect it and totally ruins my flow.
And it always seems to happens when I forget to save my work!
So after a particularly traumatic Illustrator/texture/crash event I had enough. So I started racking my brains trying to think of a way to solve this problem.
I searched all over the web for different solutions and found one that I loved. I saw a lot of screen printers using it and it just eliminated the whole issue of Illustrator crashing.
So I made a the flagship pack and called it Diet Vector Textures. Diet because, you know, the textures are super-light and won’t bloat (or crash) Illustrator.
It includes 15 high resolution TIFF files that you can easily drop into illustrator and change the color with the click of a button. These files are super-lightweight, guaranteed not to crash Illustrator, and look great in your work.
Here's some cool stuff I love about this pack:
This pack will become a reliable friend. You can come back to it again and again to use in your illustrator projects.
Plus, by combining even two different textures, resizing, and layer you can make millions of unique textures. Not to mention they're 4000x4000 pixels so they work on big projects.
Just check out the Five-Star Reviews we've received so far. This pack is not fancy or hard to use. But it works like a dream.
Grab it now for the low price of $39.

The Garage Grime Vector Brushes are a set of four packs, each with 15 unapologetically gritty Illustrator brushes (including some no-stretch vector brushes) that will make your work look as though it was drawn on paper.
So we dug around in the grimiest, most rugged place we know: our garages. And it was there that we found 65-year-old old wax crayons, oil stains, grease drips and everything we need to make this vector brush pack.
Inspired by a pack of 1950s wax oil crayons we found just sitting in a garage – hence the name – these brushes recreate the rough, unfiltered sketches made by commercial artists in the mid 20th century, and will add that vital human touch to your designs and illustrations.
Every week for the next 4 weeks you'll receive 15 new vector brushes (total of 60). Each pack will be unique and different, but they will all be garage grime inspired.
Each pack will come with a limited set of bonus no-stretch versions of some of the brushes. That means no matter how long or short you make the stroke it won't look distorted.
The no-stretch brushes will be in addition to the 15 you get. For example, in the first pack (The Oil & Grease Vector Brush Pack) you'll get 7 no-stretch brushes in addition to the 15 standard Oil & Grease Brushes
Each pack comes with an inspiring and beautifully designed brush reference guide. This makes it easy to see what each brush looks like. Plus, each reference guide includes the history behind the set.
We want you enjoy these brushes right away, so we've made easy to follow instructions with pictures. That mean's less time worrying about installation and more time creating!

I got an email from a RetroSupply customer the other day. Here's what he said:
I'm editing the email for length FYI. The awesome thing is that I've heard this a few times – and I love it!
Don't get me wrong. RetroSupply is in the business of making money (we have to pay our bills!) - But it absolutely thrills me when a customer finds something that makes them feel like they have an edge.
Did you know that when you make subtle brushes you have to carefully sharpen the edges of the brush texture? That way you don't get blotchy fades. That's just one of dozens of little extra steps we take to make sure you're getting the best textures you can find anywhere.
This is stuff we've learned from trial and error, carefully studying other products, and getting insider tips from other designers.
We know that it can be frustrating to get a product and then have to guess how to use it. That's why we create guides, videos, and reference sheets to help you get 100% out of every product you buy.
I'm good friends with a designer who has been my hero since I took my first design class. He's a fantastic illustrator. But he always had the best textures. Every time the dude put a Dribbble shot up people were commenting on these textures.
So one day I asked him how he did it (I didn't even try to ask for like a year). He graciously shared his secrets with me. I took those ideas and then slowly added my own tricks to it. This ended up being The 3-Step Texture Formula.
It's simple but I'm surprised how many people don't do it!
Some packs of textures are over the top. They're impossible to use because they're so intense and crazy.
So we focused on creating these texture packs so they enhance your work (instead of stealing your glory). These packs will add a little something to your work without drawing attention away from your designs.
Nothing is worse than getting a set of textures or brushes and then finding out they're so small you can't use them.
We make our packs big and high-res. That way you can use them on all sorts of projects. From big posters to tiny matchbooks.
This is a set of 100 overlays. Super-convenient. Just drop them on top of your work and adjust the blending mode and opacity. You'll be amazed at the different results you can get.
These have been insanely popular. My guess is because they add a subtle texture to your work without dominating it.
Plus, they've been carefully made to give you crisp yet subtle textures that don't have awkward blotched edges like other subtle brushes.
Honestly, vector textures can get crazy. It just takes a lot of anchor points to make textures in Illustrator. But I also know that some customers love them. And there are situations where vector textures are the best option.
This pack includes 60 vector ink textures for your work. You'll find halftones, paint textures, subtle textures and ore. Plus, we threw in some 19th century vector engravings for the fun of it!
These really should be called magic textures. These bitmap textures let you add super-detailed, rich and realistic textures to your vector work in seconds. Plus, they don't eat up your CPU.
Because they're bitmap textures. Just place them on top of your work, select the eyedropper tool and then select the color you want the texture to be.
It works fast and is easy to adjust, resize, and layer your textures. All in the comfort of Adobe Illustrator!
Note: This pack is brand new and only available in this bundle. But if we were to sell it it on it's own it would cost $15.
Choice #1 is to forget about this pack. Next time you're working on a project you can make your own textures (which is awesome - just time-consuming and it helps to know a few tricks). And of course,
And of course, you can take your chances playing Google roulette and see what textures come up for free.
Or you've got choice #2. Grab the Standard Issue Brush and Textures Bundle and have a heap of well-organized textures at your disposal next time you need them.
You'll save a ton of time searching the web or making your own textures. In fact, we've had customers say the pack pays for itself in one use.
Plus, you can shock your client or boss when they ask you to add texture to your work and you do it in like 3 minutes.
We're offering the pack for $29 today. But once we add more bitmap textures (and a PDF guide for the Bitmap Texture pack) the price will definitely go up.
Have you ever wondered how to use textures in Photoshop?
This pack of 100 grunge texture overlays is a great way to get your feet yet. Here's how to use these grunge textures:
This is one of the quickest and easiest ways to add texture to your work.
Use them to create grunge background textures, old paper textures, aged wall textures and more.
These textures were photographed with a Canon EOS 70D. All photographs were taken in an old grain warehouse in Yakima, Washington. Textures included concrete, old wood, rusted steel, old paint and more.
Here's everything you get when you buy the pack:

Have you ever wished you owned a wood type shop? Well, know you can own your own digital version.
The Wood & Ink Photoshop Texture Kit includes over 60 textures. Each one created in the RetroSupply Co. shop from real ink, wood, water, brushes, paper and more.
Here's what you get when you buy the pack (and the work that went into it):
20 Photoshop Wood Type Styles
Photoshop styles are like effect shortcuts. So all the information that goes into creating a specific effect can be achieved by click on a style. These Photoshop Wood Type styles were created by printing and acquiring a massive amount of wood block prints.
Then they were scanned into Photoshop and 600 DPI, carefully converted into a 100% seamless high-resolution pattern, then combined with other Photoshop effects to achieve and ink pressure look. Plus, we made it so you can easily change the color of the ink.
20 Wood & Ink Photoshop Brushes
Brushes compliment Photoshop styles great. They let you get more granular and add subtle ink textures, distressed areas and more.
I like to think of the Photoshop style as the base (which looks great on it's own) and the brushes as tools for detail work.
We've packed in tons of different types of brushes. There's fine ink textures, sprays, wood block textures, and we even threw in two 19th century inspired wood block patterns.
15 Seamless Wood Print Textures
These are the raw bases of the Photoshop styles we've included. These are just the seamless texture patterns (no style info). They're ideal for backgrounds or even creating your own personalized Photoshop styles.
Not sure how to create your own styles? Just look at the ones we've included. They'll give you some ideas on how to get started.
5 Wood Block Photoshop Brushes
These wood block brushes are a useful addition to the kit. I like to use them to fill in areas in my type work with some visual interest. Originally they were used in wood type work to help position letters. But they look pretty damn cool on their own.
5 Ink Splatter Overlays
Overlays are awesome! Need some ink splatters? No problem. Just File > Place your Ink Splatter overlay PNG into you work. The ink spray is isolated so it just lays on top of your work and looks awesome.
Free Updates Forever
Whenever we update this pack you'll get it free. Plus, you don't need to do anything. Anytime we update the pack we'll send you an email with notes about the update (plus a link so you don't have to dig through your email trying to find your original download link).
