Inking Brushes with Real Horror Comic DNA

Add real ink bleed, halftone shading, and printed-on-newsprint defects so your work looks like it came off a 1950s press.

Most digital comic brushes are way too clean. The lines are perfect, the blacks are flat, and nothing bleeds, gains, or ages the way real ink on cheap paper actually did. We just fixed that.

With Ink Bleed, you can ink with nibs that bleed and feather like the real thing, shade with dirty halftones and ink washes, and run a whole family of print-defect brushes that misregister, gain, and fray your art like a cheap press.

Everything you need for old-school comic inking.

  • Authentic vintage-comic linework. Every nib mimics real ink on absorbent newsprint with natural bleed, tooth, and pressure response.
  • Built-in print defects. Dedicated brushes for misregistration, dot gain, foxing, and paper wear. Get the little details right that bring magic to your work.
  • A complete inking system. 15 distressed inkers, 5 shaders & washes, and 5 defect brushes cover line, tone, and texture in a single workflow.
  • Real halftone & stipple shading. Dirty Halftone, Dirty Line, and Dirty Stipple shaders, plus soft and hard ink washes, give you a true comic tone.
  • Made from real references. Built from scans of real inked artwork and vintage four-color printing, so the imperfections read as printed, not rendered.
  • Drop-in ready. Import the set and ink. No setup, no fighting your tools, no plastic-perfect strokes to undo.
  • Working in the Dark. An inspiring guide that turns stories about EC Comics, Warren, Eerie Publications, and others into practical lessons for shipping faster, working with constraints, building repeatable creative systems, and more.

We didn't just make another grunge brush pack.

Most "horror" or "comic" ink brushes are either too clean (modern, even lines with a frustratingly smooth plastic look) or too generic, with over-the-top, scratchy grunge texture applied to everything.

Ink Bleed was built differently. Rooted in the pre-Code horror comics of roughly 1948–1955, printed hot and cheap on four-color newsprint. The result is inking that feels like it survived the Comics Code instead of being born after it.

Excellent Brush Pack for Vintage Inking

Having developed an interest in vintage comic book inking (specifically horror) I find that Ink Bleed has the exact look that I was not satisfied with from other brushes I’ve tried or purchased. The textures in each brush are perfect for different looks. The each brush behavior is finely tuned, especially pressure on both Photoshop and Procreate. Build up of the ink is very realistic and built up strokes visually look natural. This is the best ink brush pack RetroSupply has made by far, just buy them.

Fantastic Inkers and More - Not For Affinity V2

Who needs another set of inkers and shaders? You do! I’ve purchased a lot of brush packs in my time. So, when I saw this new Ink Bleed set from Retro Supply, I had the same thought as that whale over Magrathea, “Oh, no. Not again." Then I watched the “Comic Book Grunge: Vintage Digital Inking Tutorial - Retro Art Tutorial” on YouTube, and decided I needed it. Boy, was I right.

These brushes have the perfect blend of inkers, from smooth to scarily gritty. The pressure sensitivity is set perfectly, and every single setting seems fine-tuned to match the style I need at the moment. I used to have two inkers in my ‘Favorites’ brush category. They have been replaced by three of the inkers from this set (one of them is the secret inker they won’t tell you about.) The shaders and the defect stamps are also great, and will go into my regular rotation.

Combine this ink Bleed with either the ColorLab or Risograph brush pack for color, and maybe a pack of Phantom Paper, and you’ll have the perfect suite of tools for your vintage retro art pieces. I can't recommend these brushes highly enough.

One warning: The Compatibility message in the Specifications section tells you these brushes are for “Affinity Designer Pixel Persona only”. You have to know that they do not work in Affinity Designer versions 1 or 2. In fact, they will not even be imported to any version of Affinity designer - Windows, Mac, or iPad. As far as I can tell, these brushes will ONLY work in Affinity by Canva,…

Really close to using traditional pens!

I bought this a while ago and I'm really surprised by them! They behave so much like IRL inking tools! I'm legit in love with them! I created this piece with them of my characters from one of my webcomics I write and I'm just amazed by them. 11/10 would definitely recommend if you are a comic artist or illustrator!

    Ink Bleed Brushes

This new brush set does a great job at replicating old comic book inking brushes. Plus the shader brushes does a wonderful job at halftone and line shading.
