Customer Work: July 2024

Every day, we see art created by our inspiring customers with RetroSupply digital brushes and textures on our Instagram feed. We've selected a few outstanding designs from artists we found this May made using RetroSupply Co. products.

Tag us in your post, and let us know which of our tools you used so that you can have a chance to be featured on the RetroSupply Co. Instagram account!

Robin Banks

This humorous take on travel ads was made by none other than Robin Banks. Although this illustration is for the Salt Lake, anyone who has been to a beach can relate to the pesky birds and bugs that can plague your relaxing vacation.

Robin used several RetroSupply Co. products including Standard Pens, DupliTone, TransferTone, and the Log Cabin font available for free when you sign up for the Secret Society.

Asahi Nagata

Illustrator Asahi Nagata's work is both childlike and sophisticated. Her work is at home on children's clothing, high-priced French chocolates, or trendy home goods like in the case of the pattern below used by the company Ban.Do.

Asahi's use of shape and color is simple at first glance, but only because of the expert hand and high degree of skill needed to make it look that way. To achieve the printed look, Asahi utilizes blend modes with layers set to different opacities, and a little help from RetroSupply Co. textures.

Bottlecap Creative

The classy yet steamy work of Bottlecap Creative appears straight out of a Midcentury romance comic. Effortlessly pationate and skilled with interesting color palettes made possible with ColorLab.

We love the cool tones contrasted by a bright yellow text box and the subtle application of grain brushes to give the appearance the ink has worn away.

Joel Mentor

The work of Joel Mentor is sometimes hard to describe because of its versatility. This is due in large part to him being a very talented tattoo artist capable of many styles. This illustration caught our eye for its humor and for the fact that Mentor was able to successfully draw one of the art world's most hated subjects...hands!

This illustration utilizes many RetroSupply Co. products including Standard Pens, DupliTone, and Office Supplies.

Ed Vill

Sir Paul McCartney recently celebrated a birthday, and we can't think of anyone to capture the charm of The Beatles' heyday than Ed Vill! Made with Standard Pens and a little help from the ink distressing and paper textures from ColorLab, Ed makes midcentury era cartooning look easy.

You can see Ed's good taste in the music he likes, as well as the subtle variety in tone that makes this limited palette more exciting.

Kitty Jardenill

Kitty Jardenill's bright, eye-catching artwork is well-composed and exciting. It blends old and new design aesthetics for a "finger on the pulse" style. Kitty often uses our Risograph Brush & Texture Kit, like in this reworking of an older design. We love its simplicity, letting the illustration's shapes, color, and texture speak for themselves.

Travis Knight

The Boys has become one of the most popular shows over the years with its gritty take on the superhero genre. And it's clear that Travis Knight is a big fan, too, with this stunning portrait of Homelander.

Since The Boys started as a comic, it's an easy choice to depict its characters in a comic book style. And so it comes as no surprise that Travis picked ColorLab!

Carmen O'donnell

Although inspired by the work of MidCentury designers, Carmen O'Donnell has easily created a recognizable style all her own. Using the Complete Mid-Century Brush Collection, Carmen has created this congenial portrait of The King. We love the use of a yellow ochre for the background, giving it a sense of regality suitable for this rock and roll royalty.

Adam grason

The delightful, colorful, and fun work of Adam Grason is often like candy for your eyes. Full of life and with a whimsical charm, it's no wonder that his work often depicts The Happiest Place on Earth. This illustration was a commissioned portrait of Duffy and ShellieMay the Disney bears. Made with our Gouache Shader brushes!

Kull Kidd

It's a little early for Halloween but it's always a good day for vampires! We love this Midcentury-style cartoon illustration by Kull Kidd using DupliTone, Phantom Paper, and a little help from Office Supplies.

The limited palette and emphasis on tone is evocative of the time period it's emulating while still bringing something new and interesting to the table.

Conclusion

We've looked at a diverse range of artists and styles, including portraits of musicians, super heroes, and theme park mascots. You may have noticed that many artists were using tools recreating print work from comics to Risograph printers, although these techniques can be used in a variety of inventive ways.
